Tears During Meditation

Crying during meditation is more common than most practitioners admit, and it is almost universally regarded by experienced teachers across traditions as a positive and welcome development rather than a disturbance to be managed. In Tibetan Buddhist practice, tears arising during tonglen or deity visualisation are described as the awakening of bodhichitta: the compassionate heart that recognises the suffering of all beings as its own suffering. Christian contemplatives have a specific theological category for this experience: compunctio cordis, the piercing of the heart — the moment when genuine realisation of one's spiritual condition breaks through the ordinary defences of the ego, allowing something true and tender to finally move through the body as unstoppable grief, relief, or gratitude for the sheer fact of existing.

Spiritual Meaning

Meditation creates conditions of stillness and safety that are rare in ordinary life. In this safety, the psyche sometimes releases material it has held in suspension — grief, gratitude, longing, recognition of beauty, or the simple ache of being alive. Tears in meditation are therefore not a sign that something is wrong but often an indication that the practice is working at a deeper level than usual — that the practitioner has accessed a layer beneath ordinary thought into what contemplatives call the heart of the matter.

Practical Advice

When tears arise in meditation, stay with the practice rather than stopping to manage the emotion. Keep awareness gently on your breath and allow tears to flow without constructing a narrative around them. The meaning often becomes clear in hours or days following the session rather than in the moment. Give yourself transition time after meditating — sit quietly for a few minutes before re-entering ordinary activity, and drink water.
