Transit

Transits are the primary timing tool in astrology. By tracking when major planets cross key natal points, astrologers identify windows of opportunity, challenge, transformation, and culmination. A Jupiter transit promises expansion and abundance; a Saturn transit demands accountability and restructuring; a Pluto transit reshapes identity at a foundational level. Understanding active transits allows a person to work with prevailing cosmic energies consciously, rather than reacting blindly to events that seem entirely external but are precisely timed by planetary movement.

Definition

A transit is the ongoing movement of a planet through the zodiac as observed in real time, and specifically the relationship that moving planet forms with the fixed positions of planets in a natal chart. When a transiting planet passes over, or forms a geometric angle to, a natal planet or sensitive point, it activates the energies associated with both bodies. Transits are the most widely used predictive technique in astrology because they are objective, continuous, and trackable. Fast-moving planets like the Moon and Mercury create transits that last hours to days, producing minor fluctuations in mood or communication. Slow-moving outer planets like Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto create transits that last months or even years, often corresponding to the most defining chapters of a life. A transit does not force a specific outcome; rather, it describes the type of energy available and the themes most likely to surface during that window.

Worked Example

When Saturn transits conjunct your natal Sun — a passage that occurs approximately every 29 years — you typically experience a period of increased responsibility, external pressure, and necessary pruning. Projects or identities that lack authentic foundation tend to crumble, while disciplined efforts begin to crystallize into lasting structures. Many people report feeling older, more serious, and more purposeful during this 18-month passage.
