Synastry

Synastry provides a nuanced map of relationship dynamics that transcends simple sun sign compatibility. It reveals why certain relationships feel fated, why some partnerships are intensely intoxicating yet persistently difficult, and why others feel deeply comfortable but curiously lack spark. Astrologers use synastry to help clients understand recurring relationship patterns, recognize what they are learning through a particular bond, and carefully assess the long-term potential of a partnership. It does not predict whether a relationship will ultimately succeed, but it illuminates the underlying energetic contract operating between two people.

Definition

Synastry is the branch of astrology that examines compatibility and the dynamics between two individuals by comparing their natal charts side by side. Each person's planets are overlaid onto the other's chart, and the aspects — angular relationships — formed between one person's planets and the other's reveal the precise nature of their connection. Harmonious aspects such as trines and sextiles between key planets suggest ease, mutual support, and natural understanding. Challenging aspects such as squares and oppositions point to friction, magnetic attraction through tension, or karmic lessons that must be consciously worked through together. Synastry analyzes all relationship types: romantic partners, parent and child, business collaborators, or close lifelong friends. Particularly significant are contacts to the Ascendant, Descendant, Sun, Moon, Venus, and Mars, as these personal points most directly describe physical attraction, emotional resonance, and the felt quality of daily interaction.

Worked Example

When person A's Venus falls exactly on person B's natal Moon, there is often an immediate sense of emotional recognition and tenderness. Person A instinctively knows how to comfort person B; person B feels seen and nourished by person A's affection. This single aspect frequently appears in the synastry of long-term couples and describes a bond where love and emotional safety reinforce each other.
