Sect

Sect is one of the most important and most frequently neglected classical techniques for assessing a planet's overall condition. It fundamentally affects how well a planet delivers its promised results — a Mars out of sect in a day chart tends to manifest its malefic qualities more intensely, while a well-placed Mars in a night chart operates with much greater discipline and constructive force. Understanding sect allows practitioners to make far more accurate assessments of planetary strength and to predict with greater precision which planets in a chart are likely to help and which to hinder.

Definition

Sect is an ancient astrological principle dividing charts into two categories — diurnal and nocturnal — based on whether the Sun is above the horizon at the time of birth. A diurnal chart, also called a day chart, is one where the Sun occupies one of the six upper houses from the seventh through the twelfth house. A nocturnal chart, sometimes called a night chart, has the Sun below the horizon in houses one through six. Sect is not merely a classification of the chart but a principle that determines which planets are working with the energetic conditions of the chart and which are working against them. The diurnal planets are the Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn; the nocturnal planets are the Moon, Venus, and Mars. Mercury is neutral, taking on the sect of whichever luminary it rises with or is closest to. In a day chart the diurnal planets express their significations more clearly and beneficially, while the nocturnal planets are said to be out of sect — a condition of accidental debility that makes them more unpredictable or extreme. In a night chart the reverse applies. Sect also extends to the element and hemisphere of a planet's placement, with a fully in-sect planet requiring that it be in the appropriate hemisphere and a sign of the right orientation to fully maximize its sect condition.

Worked Example

A person born at noon with the Sun high in the tenth house has a strongly diurnal chart. Their Jupiter is in the eleventh house in Sagittarius — in sect, in domicile, and angular enough to be active. This Jupiter is exceptionally well-positioned to deliver its significations generously: social abundance, optimism, and the expansion of resources through networks. The same person's Mars in Gemini in the third house is out of sect, increasing the likelihood that Mars themes manifest as anxiety, communication conflicts, or restless mental friction rather than as focused, constructive energy.
