Progression

Progressions reveal the gradual, organic unfolding of the self rather than mapping external events. Where transits describe what the cosmos is doing to you, progressions describe what you are genuinely becoming from within. An astrologer tracking progressions can identify when a person is entering a new emotional phase, when their core ambitions naturally shift, or when previously latent qualities of the natal chart are finally ready to emerge and express. The progressed New Moon marks especially important new chapters that unfold gradually over the following several years.

Definition

Progressions are a predictive technique in which the natal chart is symbolically advanced to reflect inner development and soul-level maturation over time. The most widely used method is secondary progressions, which operate on the principle of 'a day for a year': each day after birth corresponds to one year of life. So the planetary positions on the tenth day after your birth describe the energies available during your tenth year. Unlike transits, which track actual planetary movement, progressions are an internal clock — they describe how your personality, needs, and approach to life naturally evolve. The progressed Moon, which changes sign every two and a half years, is a particularly sensitive timer of emotional chapters and inner priorities. The progressed Sun changes sign approximately every thirty years, marking profound shifts in core identity and life direction. Progressions rarely work in isolation; they are most revealing when interpreted alongside transits to the natal chart.

Worked Example

When the progressed Moon enters Scorpio, a person typically enters a two-and-a-half-year period of emotional depth, psychological excavation, and heightened intensity in relationships. Topics like intimacy, control, grief, or shared resources demand attention. What felt comfortable in the previous Libra Moon phase — harmony, social connection, balance — gives way to a hunger for authenticity, even if it is uncomfortable.
