Planetary Dignity Table
The planetary dignity table is the essential scoring system of traditional astrology, determining how effectively any planet can deliver its promised results and how reliably its significations manifest in the native's experience. Without reference to the dignity table, chart reading reduces to a description of planetary positions without any assessment of their quality or effectiveness. Mastering the table transforms a practitioner's ability to distinguish between planets that are genuinely powerful in a chart and those that are merely present, greatly improving predictive accuracy.
Definition
The planetary dignity table is a structured reference showing the essential dignities and debilities of each of the seven classical planets across all twelve signs and, in its most complete form, across every degree of the zodiac. Essential dignities indicate positions of strength where a planet is in some sense at home, empowered, or well-suited to its environment: domicile rulership, exaltation, triplicity, term, and face or decan. Essential debilities indicate positions of weakness: detriment, fall, and peregrine status when no dignity applies. The dignity table allows an astrologer to immediately assess the intrinsic strength of any planet at any zodiacal position. Domicile rulership is the primary dignity, granting the planet full authority in its own sign; exaltation is the secondary dignity, describing a particularly elevated and honored position even if the planet is a guest rather than the host. Triplicity divides each element's three signs among two or three rulers based on diurnal or nocturnal status. Terms assign five short arcs of each sign to different planets based on ancient tables that differ between the Egyptian and Ptolemaic traditions. Faces, also called decans, divide each sign into three ten-degree sections each governed by a planet in Chaldean order. The complete dignity table is one of the foundational reference tools of traditional astrological practice and was memorized by working astrologers in the classical and medieval periods as foundational professional knowledge.
Worked Example
Consulting the dignity table for a chart with Mars at twenty-two degrees Capricorn reveals that Mars holds its exaltation in Capricorn — one of the most powerful essential dignities available. This Mars is not just present in Capricorn but is functioning at the peak of its organizational, ambitious, and disciplined expression. Contrast this with Mars at twenty-two degrees Cancer, where it is in its fall, operating at minimum dignity and expressing its significations in frustrated, reactive, or ineffective ways. The same planet in opposite signs tells entirely different stories about outcome.
