Part of Fortune

Practitioners use the Part of Fortune to identify where a client is most naturally lucky, where they consistently experience flow rather than struggle, and which areas of life tend to support their overall wellbeing. Its house placement is particularly informative in a reading. The sign placement and any aspects made to the Part of Fortune further refine and nuance this picture considerably. In traditional medical astrology, the Part of Fortune was also used to assess the condition of the physical body alongside the Moon and Sixth house.

Definition

The Part of Fortune, known in ancient Greek astrology as Kleros or Lot of Fortune, is one of the most important Arabic Parts or Lots used in traditional astrology. It is calculated using the positions of the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant in a formula that differs for day and night births. For a day chart, the formula is Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun. For a night chart, it is Ascendant plus Sun minus Moon. The resulting degree marks a point in the chart associated with luck, worldly prosperity, physical wellbeing, and the overall quality of fortune in the material world. The Part of Fortune is not a planet but a sensitive point that synthesizes the three most important factors in the natal chart: the luminaries and the Ascendant. Its sign, house placement, and the condition of its dispositor all describe where and how a native is most likely to encounter good fortune, ease, and the feeling of being in the right place at the right time. In Hellenistic astrology it was considered the most important of all the lots.

Worked Example

A person with the Part of Fortune in the Tenth house in Sagittarius is likely to find their greatest worldly success through careers involving teaching, travel, publishing, law, or philosophy. The expansive and generous nature of Sagittarius flavors the fortune point, suggesting that luck arrives most readily when they pursue breadth of experience and share their wisdom freely rather than playing it safe.
