Horary Astrology

Horary astrology provides a direct, question-specific answer to concrete life situations without requiring birth data, making it extraordinarily practical for consultations. Its internal logic is coherent and testable — either the significators apply to aspect or they do not, either the Moon is in a supportive or a debilitating condition, either the answer is yes or no — which makes horary uniquely accountable among astrological methods. Many practitioners consider it the most rigorous and demonstrably effective branch of the tradition.

Definition

Horary astrology is the branch of astrology that answers specific questions by casting a chart for the exact moment a sincerely asked question is understood by the astrologer. The chart erected for that moment is treated as a complete astrological judgment about the question's likely outcome, using the traditional principles of planetary dignity, house rulership, and aspect perfection to reach a verdict. The word horary comes from the Latin hora meaning hour, reflecting the fundamental importance of the precise moment of the question's reception. Unlike natal astrology, horary does not require a birth date — only the moment of the question. The querent is assigned the Ascendant and its ruling planet, while the quesited — the person or matter being asked about — is assigned the house and ruler that corresponds to that category of question: the seventh house for romantic partners, the fourth for real estate, the fifth for speculation, the tenth for career, and so on. The astrologer then determines whether the two significators will come into a perfecting aspect, and under what conditions, as the primary indicator of whether the querent will achieve the desired outcome. Horary was the dominant predictive tool for working astrologers in the medieval and Renaissance periods, systematized most famously by William Lilly in his seventeenth-century text Christian Astrology. It remains one of the most precise and testable branches of astrological practice.

Worked Example

A client asks whether they will receive a job offer after an interview last week. The horary chart has Gemini rising with Mercury in the tenth house in Virgo at full dignity, and the Moon in Cancer in the second house applying to a trine with Mercury within two degrees. The Moon represents the flow of events and applies directly to the chart ruler in the house of career, and Mercury is in its domicile with strong essential dignity. The astrologer judges: yes, the offer will come, and the applying trine within two degrees suggests within approximately two weeks.
