Descendant

Understanding the Descendant helps clarify recurring patterns in close relationships. The qualities described by the Descendant sign are often experienced as magnetic in others, yet potentially destabilizing when encountered, because they reflect the undeveloped half of the self. Astrologers use it to identify the type of partner that both challenges and completes a person over time. Transits to the Descendant frequently coincide with significant relationship events, including meeting important people, formal commitments, or the ending of significant partnerships.

Definition

The Descendant is the point directly opposite the Ascendant on the natal chart, sitting on the western horizon and marking the cusp of the Seventh House. While the Ascendant describes the self, the Descendant describes the other — specifically, the qualities you seek in close partnerships, the traits you may project onto significant others, and the type of energy that genuinely balances your own. It is the gateway to committed one-on-one relationships, whether romantic partnerships, business collaborations, or open adversaries. The sign on the Descendant is always directly opposite the Ascendant sign; if you have Aries rising, your Descendant falls in Libra. This polarity is deeply instructive: the Descendant represents qualities that feel instinctively foreign to your natural self-expression but are nonetheless essential for psychological wholeness. Planets placed in the Seventh House or close to the Descendant degree carry enormous interpretive weight in all matters of partnership and relating.

Worked Example

A person with Gemini rising has a Sagittarius Descendant. They may consistently attract partners who are philosophical, adventurous, or refreshingly blunt — qualities that feel foreign to their own Gemini adaptability and quick wit. Over time, these relationships push them to commit to deeper truths rather than skimming the surface, slowly integrating Sagittarian directness and conviction into their own evolving character.
