Decanate
Decanates provide practitioners with a valuable tool for fine-tuning their interpretation of planetary placements. When two clients share the same Sun sign, examining their decanates can explain meaningful and sometimes striking differences in how that shared sign energy ultimately manifests in personality and life events. In some traditional systems, decanates carry specific face rulers that further modify interpretation. Decan analysis proves especially useful in timing techniques and in distinguishing between natives with similar charts who nonetheless express their shared placements in noticeably distinct ways.
Definition
A decanate, also called a decan, is a subdivision of each zodiac sign into three equal segments of ten degrees each, resulting in thirty-six decanates across the entire zodiac. The concept originates in ancient Egyptian astrology and was later incorporated into Hellenistic astrological practice. Each of the three decanates of a sign is associated with a co-ruler drawn from the same elemental triplicity. For example, the three decanates of Aries — which is a fire sign — are ruled by Mars, the Sun, and Jupiter respectively, corresponding to Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius, the three fire signs. This means that planets and points falling in different decanates of the same sign are colored by slightly different sub-energies. A planet at two degrees Aries occupies the Mars decanate, while a planet at twenty-two degrees Aries occupies the Jupiter decanate, giving it a more expansive, philosophical quality than a placement in the first decanate. Decanates add a layer of nuance and specificity to chart interpretation that goes beyond the basic sign placement.
Worked Example
Two people born under the Sun in Capricorn may express that energy quite differently based on their decanate. A person with the Sun in the first decanate of Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, is likely to exhibit classic Capricorn discipline and reserve. Someone with the Sun in the third decanate, ruled by Mercury through the Virgo connection, may channel Capricorn's ambition through intellectual precision, writing, or detailed analysis.
