Conjunction

Conjunctions are the most potent aspect in the astrological vocabulary because they represent pure, undiluted concentration of energy at a single chart point. In a natal chart, they identify where the most intensely focused and defining themes of life permanently reside. In transit work, a conjunction from an outer planet to a natal planet marks a profound moment of activation — the unmistakable beginning of an entirely new personal cycle. Astrologers consistently prioritize conjunctions when reading any chart because they represent the clearest, loudest signal of where a person's attention, fate, and deepest growth are concentrated.

Definition

A conjunction is formed when two or more planets occupy the same or very nearby degrees in the zodiac, typically within an orb of eight to ten degrees. It is the most powerful of all the major aspects, representing a complete fusion or blending of the energies of the planets involved. A conjunction does not inherently describe a harmonious or inharmonious relationship between planets — it describes intense merger. The two bodies involved act as a single unified force, simultaneously amplifying and complicating each other's expression. When personal planets conjoin in the natal chart, the themes of both planets become inseparable in the person's experience — they operate together as one indivisible motivational complex. The nature of a conjunction depends heavily on the planets involved: a Sun-Jupiter conjunction is generally expansive and self-confident, while a Sun-Saturn conjunction brings disciplined resolve alongside a tendency toward restriction. Context, sign, and house placement all significantly modify the interpretation.

Worked Example

A person with Mars conjunct Pluto in the natal chart carries an extraordinary reservoir of willpower, intensity, and transformative drive. Their ambitions border on obsessive, and they often accomplish what others consider impossible through sheer force of will. The shadow side of this conjunction is a difficulty surrendering control or recognizing when enough effort has been applied. Power dynamics in relationships often become a recurrent theme in their story.
